Stealth of the Thin by Kevin Sheehan

The Needle is the second iteration of an earlier ‘rocket’ piece called wisdom. The core of the work is based on creating a sound instrument. The second version has a very long body made from highly polished light-reflecting aluminium repurposed from a 2016 drum sound piece that still shows its ‘scars’. It is carefully constructed/ formed using the artist’s engineering background mediated by art and personal history. The body bears calligraphy-like marks reminiscent of the Harmon on blades in Japanese swordmaking.

The Needle works with the concept of the straight line, the lack of which is evident because there are no straight lines on the body or in the universe. A theoretical conundrum around the idea of tunnel vision unrelated to reality.

Both rockets are made as self-propelling vehicles, artworks capable of being driven.

The artist is performing a sound work during the opening reception on 9 December 2023.

Kevin Sheehan, and the carried Celtic spirit.

Musician, miner, mechanic, mutilator of film, maker of film,

Super-duper-eighter. Photographer.

Painter, installator, action man, vehicle restorer and bodyworker sublime. Always Musician.

Motorcycle maven, solitary explorer of extra sensory strivings with meticulous mechanical models in mind.

Artificial nothing. And Real Intelligence with diligence.

Attention paid in spades to the world around, as seen and experienced. At times painfully and injuriously.

Through what he can actually do - what he has found out,

Sensuously with, all senses functioning sensationally.

An artist.

Doing: so important.

Long time doing; important for the rhythm of the work.

The rhythm of the thoughts, the melodies in the making.

Labour is the analogue for the human male. The ordinary bog standard male, but having explored all those means with eyes and ears open to get to Now.

Now, the artifacts are ironic and of all of This.

Containing all of that.

Those dialogues recognise the futility of it all.

Though in their way monuments,

Can exist as Synonyms for the colossal absurdities taking place elsewhere.

With bigger more hideous names and even bigger bangs.

An artist for our time. Sentient, scrupulous.
